Reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has put himself in an incredible lead this season.
The Belgian icon is currently 116 points ahead of second-placed Charles Leclerc.
And won the last one FIVE Races in a row, it would be an absolute miracle for Verstappen to throw away the title.
But can the defending champion retain his title at this Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix?
Can Max Verstappen win the F1 title this weekend?
Mathematically, the Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz still have outsider chances.
Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez is also still in contention, as is Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes partner George Russell.
However, if Verstappen’s closest rival Leclerc finished below eighth at the Marina Bay circuit this weekend and the Belgian star secured first place on the podium, he would be crowned champion.
But it could be a big challenge as Leclerc has never finished outside the top six this season.
F1 driver standings
Here are the current top ten of the 2022 standings:
- Max Verstappen – 335 points
- Charles Leclerc – 219 points
- Sergio Perez – 210 points
- George Russell – 203 points
- Carlos Sainz – 197 points
- Lewis Hamilton – 168 points
- Lando Norris – 88 points
- Esteban Ocon – 66 points
- Fernando Alonso – 59 points
- Valterri Bottas – 46 points
What is the earliest F1 title win?
There is no easy answer to this as the number of races in a season has increased over the years.
The very first Formula 1 calendar from 1950 only had a total of seven races, while Verstappen had to race 22 circuits before winning the title last season.
However, German legend Michael Schumacher was crowned F1 champion with most races remaining.
Schumacher clinched the 2002 title with six GPs to go, closely followed by former Renault racer Nigel Mansell, who won the championship with five races to go.
Max Verstappen’s chances of topping Schumacher’s record have been dashed with the cancellation of the Russian GP.
But the Belgian can equal Mansell’s record with a win at the Singapore GP.
When is the Singapore Grand Prix?
- The Singapore Grand Prix takes place on Sunday October 2nd on the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
- The start is planned 1pm UK time – 8 p.m. local time.
- A Max Verstappen win would mean SIX straight wins for the Belgian this season.
