It comes after Belgian police seized more than £1.3million in raids on 19 homes and Parliament offices. They released a photo of bundles of notes found during the investigation.

Kaili, 44, who is being held in a Brussels jail, is one of four people charged with corruption and money laundering.

She has refused to accept payments from Qataris who want to buy influence.

Her attorney said: “Her position is that she is innocent. It has nothing to do with Qatar’s bribes.”

But EU leaders last night voted 625-1 to remove her as one of the assembly’s 14 vice-presidents.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said his country’s police are doing what “the European Parliament has not done”.

And Cypriot MEP Loucas Fourlas claimed Kaili had asked him to amend a highly critical report on LGBT rights in the Gulf state.

Qatar, currently hosting the World Cup, also denies wrongdoing.

His top state lobbyist in France told Politico: “We don’t have to pay MPs anything to convince them.”

Critics say the scandal has made a mockery of the EU’s ability to educate other countries and organizations on preventing corruption.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the saga was “extremely worrying” and promised to tighten lobbying rules.

The UK stopped sending MPs to the European Parliament in January 2020 after the implementation of Brexit.
