Guimaraes, 24 years old, signed Saudi-owned Toon from Lyon for a fee of up to £42m amid interest in January from Arsenal.

When asked if Newcastle are threatened with relegation as big as Archer, he declared: “Certainly. We will become a club that will become a powerhouse in world football.

“This is a historic club with a great tradition and a beautiful history. I have no doubt about my decision to come to Newcastle.

“They won the championship but we want more – we want to win the Champions League. The owners were very upfront and honest. They make no secret that the main goal and challenge remains in the Premier League this season.

“But in the coming seasons, the goal is to get to the Champions League and ultimately to win the Champions League.

“I believe in the project and I believe in everything they’ve told me.”

Newcastle prepares to appoint Dan Ashworth as director of football after he stepped down as technical director of Brighton.

The Magpies have offered the former FA director around £2m a year plus bonuses, almost double his Brighton salary.

Newcastle are said to have offered Ashworth around £2m a year plus bonuses, more than double what he was at Brighton.

Albion has offered to increase his annual salary to more than £1m but is still vastly short of the wealth offered in Tyneside.

The search for Ashworth’s replacement at Amex will begin shortly with a shortlist of three expected to be made available.

David Weir, recently promoted to Ashworth’s assistant, is performing the role on an acting basis and will likely be interviewed for a full-time gig.

But coach Eddie Howe suffered a blow as star striker Callum Wilson was sidelined until the ‘last few games’ of the season.

Wilson, 29, sustained a calf injury during the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on December 27.

Howe said: “He has progressed very slowly since the initial injury. I don’t think it will be short term.

“Hopefully he can play the last few games of the season and really help us at a crucial moment.”
