Brock Purdy is just like Tom Brady and the best rookie since Dan Marino, says Brent Jones as he predicts QB’s future

BRENT Jones knows a superstar quarterback when he sees one.

The 49ers legend and three-time Super Bowl champion was on the commentary service back in 2001 when a young upstart named Tom Brady made his first ever start for the New England Patriots.

Jones was blown away – both on and off the field – by Brady’s attitude and ability for someone so young and new to hard hitting school.

The rest is glorious history, of course, as Brady embarked on a 20-year, trophy-laden stint with the Pats that will forever be etched in sporting lore.

However, Jones looks at new 49ers sensation Brock Purdy — the last pick of the 2022 draft, aka Mr. Irrelevant — and is instantly transported back to the night he watched the GOAT begin their NFL odyssey.

Purdy, 23, has been enjoying the rookie season of his dreams and tumbled into an injury crisis before taking Kyle Shanahan’s men to a win from a first Super Bowl appearance since 2013.

The No. 1 seed Philadelphia Eagles are anticipating Sunday’s NFC Championship Showdown.

He’s arguably the breakout star of 2023 — and Jones is loving what he’s seen.

“I remember interviewing Tom before his first game in 2001,” the Bay Area legend said in an exclusive interview with The US Sun ahead of this weekend’s Crunch duel.

“I hadn’t heard from him except that I knew he was playing in Michigan. He was a boy from the Bay Area. So he grew up a Niners fan and wanted to ask me questions about the team.

“I remember walking away impressed. He would not be held back. I spoke to Bill Belichick who said the whole offense is open to this young guy. He worked hard. He was very busy. He can handle anything.

“And I remember thinking, ‘Wow, that’s kind of interesting, for three or four weeks this kid here in New England is going to have the keys to the kingdom.’ What I didn’t know, he would never give up those keys.

“I can’t say right now that Brock will be the new Tom Brady, but there are a lot of similarities. Tom was never affected. He was never nervous and Brock is like that. He’s the best rookie I’ve seen since Dan Marino.”

The QB certainly has work to do, but it’s worth noting that the night Jones is talking about was Brady’s second season.

Purdy is in his rookie year and the stats since he joined the team are pretty remarkable.

After the final regular-season game against Arizona, Purdy became the only quarterback since 1950 to win his first five NFL starts and throw two or more touchdown passes in every game.

And just as impressive, the boy with the golden arm is the first rookie QB since at least 1970 to register 200 or more passing yards in consecutive postseason games.

“You just don’t see the deer in the headlights on Brock,” Jones added.

“He has a lot of great weapons around him and an offensive line that he did well. And I think it gave him confidence that grew with every game. But I’ve watched every minute of his play and am still amazed by the way he treats himself, not just in the huddle but in the pocket.

“And that’s really key because young players get happy feet, they see things that don’t really exist, they make decisions on a whim. And that usually leads to chaos and sales.

“But in Brock’s case, that’s not the case. Tom was such a quiet, humble and untouched child when we met all those years ago. Brock has the same disposition.”

Of course, there’s still a long way to go before Purdy can sit at the top of the NFL with the likes of Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes and his superstar pals.

Jones knows it too – but thinks he’s seen enough to be convinced the new San Francisco star has what it takes.

He said: “He’s certainly making progress on that spectrum. I mean, he’s still in his rookie year. But he handles a lot and at a very high level.

“I think nowadays we always confuse ourselves because we’re trying to compare one guy to another and if you’ve done that for 10 or 12 years then you can do that.

“Brock hasn’t even done it for 10 or 12 games but it’s really fun to watch him do it because he’s about to do something really special.”
