It’s safe to say that Maliek Collins won’t be on the Mahomes’ Christmas card list this holiday season.
For NFL fans, last weekend’s surprises and comebacks left and right won’t be easily forgotten.
And a near-monumental upset came in Houston when the 1-12-1 Texans hosted and nearly defeated the Super Bowl favorite 11-3 Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
But while the result would have angered many Texans fans and nearly upset many Chiefs fans, it apparently infuriated Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife Brittany.
In second and fourth place, with 8:53 left in the second quarter, Mahomes fumbled for the snap that gave the Texans Collins defensive tackle an opportunity to drop it for a three-yard loss.
And while Mahomes walked off the tackle seemingly unscathed, many in the audience cringed to see the force with which Mahomes was thrown to the ground by the veteran lineman.
After the challenge, the former Chiefs quarterback became analyst Trent Green commented: “That was a big slap to the ground, but it’s not illegal. It’s different if he (Collins) had landed on him (Mahomes).”
But Brittany and Green don’t seem to agree on the matter, with the former tweet: “I’m confused, are we allowed to attack quarterbacks like this now? Got it. The inconsistency is BS.”
This is because the roughing of passer penalties continues to draw criticism from across the league, including incidents involving events similar to Tom Brady and Geno Smith.
And fan reactions varied, with some as frustrated as Brittany, such as one who commented: “Yeah and it should have been an unnecessary shout of rudeness! First his arm was around Patrick’s neck, then he threw him to the ground, hitting his head first. I thought the NFL should protect their QBs. Apparently just not Patrick!”
Another said: “The point about the inconsistency is valid. A few weeks ago everyone was complaining about how each bag was called RTP. Now do you allow that? I don’t think the referees are biased towards any particular team or player, but these calls appear random and affect the results.”
While one replied: “Trent Green just said it’s allowed. It’s weird that you can beat a QB but can’t put all your weight on a QB when you sack them. Very inconsistent.”
Thankfully, Mahomes finished the game and appears to have left his 30-24 win healthy, winning the AFC West in the process.
Next up for Mahomes and Co. are the Seattle Seahawks on Christmas Eve.
