Gbemi, from Marlow, Bucks, said: “When I’m not coming to work, people at risk are without medicine and therapy. As a team leader, I have to be there.

“People like me, who make a lot less than £59,000, are picking up the pieces.”

District Nurse Laura Mills, 31, from Bognor Regis, West Sussex, says the train strikes have wiped out her first week off since winter.

She said: “I should take the train to visit family in Yorkshire. I’m looking at hours on the road and £300 to fill my tank. It’s cheaper not to take a holiday.”

And 21-year-old University of Central Lancashire PhD student Takanayi Murey will be forced to pay for petrol or spend 90 minutes on a bus to get to his hospital because of strikes.

He said: “Just getting to the university and the hospital has become more stressful.”
