The alarm went off around 7am today and emergency services rushed to the scene.
Paramedics tried to revive the victim but he died of his wounds, CM Journal reports.
Local reports say a man with a knife in his hand and blood on his hands was found and identified at the nearby apartment.
He and his alleged victim are said to know each other.
It is reported that the stabbing took place after the man returned home from a nightclub.
His nationality has not yet been announced – but police believe he is the prime suspect.
It is not yet known whether the dead man lived in Portugal or was vacationing there, although the apartment where the murder took place has been described as part of a tourist complex usually frequented by foreign tourists.
Officers from the Portuguese GNR force were first on the scene, along with paramedics.
The Policia Judiciaria is conducting an ongoing investigation.
Police there could not be reached immediately for comment as today is a bank holiday in Portugal.
