Britain’s armed forces are “hollow and underfunded,” admits Ben Wallace
Britain’s armed forces are “underdeveloped and underfunded,” the defense secretary admitted today.
Ben Wallace’s admission to MPs came as Whitehall discussed a heated cash push ahead of the March budget.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak indicated that the Defense Ministry’s budget will be increased by a “record amount” in 2021.
Bute would not resort to further climbs yesterday in Darlington, County Durham.
An updated global threat review is due on March 7, with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt acknowledging more money is needed for defense.
Financial insiders say the promised cost of replenishing ammunition, guns, tanks and artillery is being met.
Officials are considering the millions needed to reverse the troop cuts.
But Mr Wallace is pushing for broader and deeper investment in the armed forces.
Defense Secretary James Heappey expects the money to “recapitalize” the army to come.
He told MPs yesterday: “The Chancellor and the Prime Minister understand that and there is a budget coming.”
