A “BRIT pilot” has died after a CRASHED military jet was on a “test flight” – injuring his Italian colleague.
The M-346 trainer was flying over the mountains north of Lake Como when it crashed in Lombardy, Italy, at midday today.
It is believed that the two pilots ejected the plane from the plane, before it crashed while “conducting tests for the Italian Armed Forces”, reports Online email.
The jet crashed at about 8,200 feet before catching fire and crashing near the town of Colico.
Huge plumes of black smoke were seen near the top of the mountain, with witnesses saying the “fireball” produced a “loud roar of terror”.
Emergency services recovered the body of the “British pilot” this afternoon.
His Italian co-pilot remains in serious condition with “serious facial injuries” at a Milan hospital, local newspaper reports La Repubblica.
It is thought the jet had been “flying for about twenty hours” and was returning to base when it crashed.
The plane’s manufacturer, Leonardo, released a statement after the crash saying it “sends its sincerest condolences to the pilot who tragically lost his life.
They said: “This morning, at around 12pm, an M-346 crashed in the area above Colico (Monte Legnone) near Como, Northern Italy.
“Emergency vehicles are currently operating in the area and Leonardo, in accordance with established practice, immediately activated an internal investigative committee. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
“Unfortunately, rescue teams that arrived at the crash site identified one of the two pilots as missing. Leonardo sends his sincerest condolences.
“Leonardo reserves the right to provide further updates on this event over the next several hours.”
