According to investigators, a TRAI died after shooting himself while sitting in a car with his mother, who was smoking.
At a news conference Monday night, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announced Jarion Walker, 4, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident occurred in a vehicle in Westwego, Louisiana on January 29 at about 10:45 p.m. KST.
Walker was believed to be in the back seat of his car with his two brothers, both under the age of two, when he found a gun under the saddle.
The gun is believed to belong to the boy’s father, who was not in the vehicle.
The boy was taken to the hospital but could not cope with his injuries.
Authorities said Walker’s mother and another person, both unnamed, were smoking marijuana in the car at the time of the incident.
Both reportedly admitted to not paying attention to children in the back seat.
Investigators are initially looking into the possibility that one of the brothers shot Walker.
At first, the gunshots seemed to be behind the boy’s head.
However, that was ruled out by Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich, who discovered that the wound was “a contact wound to the forehead, just above the right eyebrow”, according to the Independent.
Lopinto said the finding “makes it more likely that it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound by a 4-year-old child.”
“We didn’t think a four-year-old could control a weapon to shoot from the angle the bullet entered,” Lopinto said.
No arrests have been made in the case, although detectives plan to complete a full investigation into the incident.
“I don’t think arrest at this point is appropriate,” Lopinto said.
“They just lost a child, and it certainly wasn’t intentional, by any means.”
