Boy, 10, killed and boy, 9, seriously injured after being hit and dragged by a train in Germany

A CHILD has died and another boy is fighting for his life after they were hit by a train and dragged along.

The young people were dragged along several hundred meters by a freight train in Recklinghausen in western Germany.

The incident happened at 6:12 p.m. and a 10-year-old boy has died.

Local media reported another nine-year-old suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where the boy is struggling to survive.

According to a police spokesman, both boys come from the city of Recklinghausen.

Police confirmed that several other young people were involved in the accident but gave no further details.

It’s unclear how the accident unfolded, but local media said more than 35 firefighters and rescue workers were deployed to the scene of the accident near a former freight yard.

Rescue teams searched the track bed and used drones to search for victims, they added.

Herbert Reul, interior minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, told journalists: “It’s terrible.

“Kids and trains and at such a young age, it’s just terrible what happened here and one can only hope that the parents have the strength to overcome this great misfortune.

“Why, how come, these are all questions that nobody can answer yet and nothing would solve.”
