Bottom for Prem for first time since 1992, worst start in 101 years & LIVERPOOL next… could things get any worse for United?

TOO good to go down?

Well the current cheaters playing for Manchester United are certainly not…

Not when you look at that hilariously difficult defeat at Brentford or that paltry 2-1 home defeat to Brighton six days ago.

With perfect timing, United delivered their worst top performance in three decades on the weekend of the Premier League’s 30th anniversary.

And so United are bottom of the Premier League for the first time since the first games, when the division restarted in 1992.

Over the years there has been a 5-0 loss at Chelsea in 1999 and a 4-1 loss at home to Liverpool in 2009.

Manchester City’s 6-1 thrashing in 2011 hurt badly – as did the humiliation at home from that goal against Spurs in 2020.

Less surprising but just as embarrassing was the 5-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last October and the 4-0 defeat by the same side four months ago.

But those punches were worse than all those dark moments. Much worse.

It’s admittedly patronizing to say it was just Brentford, but it’s true. It was just Brentford.

To be four goals behind in the 35th minute of the second game of the season was unbelievable and unacceptable.

Brentford is the opposite of United – despite their relatively modest resources, they have intelligent and sensible recruitment.

The Alex Ferguson Stand at Old Trafford holds more fans than the full capacity of Brentford Community Stadium.

And how some of these United supporters will have nightmares about this trip.

So does Christian Eriksen. The Dane will have expected some stick on his return to the club that gave him a chance last season.

But at no point could he have expected to endure the most humiliating day of his career – and he received a wry cheer from home fans when he came on as a late substitute.

Bees fans chanted, “You should have stay at a big club.”

Eriksen played a leading role in one of the comical goals – the second – when he lost the ball after a crazy pass from David de Gea while Mathias Jensen netted.

De Gea’s worst moment was actually the first goal, when he somehow let Josh Dasilva’s shot slip through his hands.

You always know when United have been a little c**p because De Gea wins their player of the season.

But you wouldn’t bet money on him winning it for the fifth time already.

In fact, United should perhaps agree to scrap the award this season as the signs look so ominous.

There have been various issues with their recruitment – but not signing a defensive midfielder is spot on.

It’s ridiculous that they didn’t leave Frenkie de Jong weeks ago as he clearly doesn’t want to go there.

Likewise, any team with Cristiano Ronaldo, Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes playing the backbone of the team – along with 5ft 9in Lisandro Martinez at center back – will be a bit weak.

But if you thought things couldn’t get any worse for United, they really can. Their next game is against Liverpool tomorrow week.

So will they be relegated in nine months? Probably not.

But Champions League football next season? You laugh.
