Boris Johnson has warned the Cabinet that early signs suggest the new Omicron variant is more transmissible than the Delta variant.

Downing Street said ministers were not discussing the introduction of Plan B measures – but said the Government could move “quickly” if new restrictions needed to be imposed.

The Prime Minister is planning make a decision next week on whether more Covid measures are needed after experts have provided more data on the new variant.

Describing Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “The Prime Minister said it was too early to draw conclusions on the characteristics of Omicron but early indications suggest that it is easy. spread than Delta.

“Other measures have been introduced this week to help slow transmission and further seed the variant. NHS of course to achieve the goal of providing a booster for all adults by the end of January. ”

The Government’s Winter Covid Blueprint includes a list of plan B measures – such as face masks, work from home and passport vaccines – that could be included if the situation worsens.

Ministers have resisted the plan to impose B so far but the emergence of the new variant of Omicron has caused concern to the Government.

Masks have been made mandatory in shops and public transport, while stricter testing regulations have been introduced for overseas travel.

All arrivals from abroad must now take a Covid test two days before travelling, as well as a PCR test when they arrive in the UK.

Travelers must quarantine until they get their results, even if they’re double-stabbed.

Isolation rules have also been tightened for any contact of known Omicron cases.

People are now required to stay at home for 10 days regardless of vaccination status.

Mr Johnson is expected to make an announcement to MPs on whether Covid restrictions should be changed in the final week before Parliament dissolves on December 16.

On Monday, Downing Street did not rule out imposing recess snap restrictions if necessary.
