BORIS Johnson is preparing to tear up the hated Brexit deal for Northern Ireland as early as Friday.
The PM will spark an all-powerful row with the EU by drafting legislation that goes against the landmark deal he signed just 2½ years ago.
Last night he called Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and warned that the current “very serious” situation was jeopardizing the hard-fought Good Friday peace deal.
However, government insiders said no final decisions had been made just yet.
Today Secretary of State Liz Truss will tell EU leaders that the protocol is driving up food prices and wreaking havoc on businesses.
However, EU leaders have reiterated their uncompromising position, insisting that “renegotiation is not an option”.
Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson said earlier this week it was time for Johnson’s government to “step forward” and settle the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Thereafter, controls will be required for goods entering the province from the rest of the UK.
It has been a source of tensions in the UK and EU, and sources say Truss is “deeply concerned” after Brussels said it will “never” change its negotiating stance.
