In fact, thanks to these tips from Phil Lawlor, a sleep expert at Dormeo, there is absolutely no reason for you to stay up all night, desperate for something to close your eyes.

And while they may seem a bit counter-intuitive at first, you’ll soon wonder how you didn’t know about these hacks sooner.

Rub behind your ears

To do this, start by finding the ‘Anmian point’ which is the bony area behind your ear.

“Just massaging a small area in a circular motion 100-200 times will help relax your nervous system,” explains the sleep expert.

Phil thinks this is a great way to treat insomnia, so if you’re trying to close your eyes, perhaps give it a try.

Curl your toes

You’ve probably had too many curled-up moments in your life, but we promise, this is the moment you’ll have to.

“Close your toes, then hold for a few seconds, then release for 20-30 seconds,” explains Phil.

“Repeat this move to help relax your mind and body.”

Phile says this has been shown to relax muscles in the body and release tension.

This technique focuses your attention on one body part and helps your other muscles relax more easily.

Belly rubs

If your toes and ears are letting you down, perhaps consider a belly rub.

This can help relax your stomach muscles, says Phil, and promote relaxation.

To do that, he says, “Starting at the navel, rub your belly in larger and larger circles clockwise and then smaller counter-clockwise and repeat.”

And soon you can feel your eyelids closing.

Drink some cherry juice

What you eat or drink before bed makes a huge difference in how you sleep.

And if you’re looking for a delicious nighttime treat, why not sip on cherry juice.

Phil says it’s rich in melatonin, a hormone that helps induce sleep and, in some studies, helped adults with insomnia.

Challenge yourself to stay awake

Who would have thought that the secret to falling asleep faster was to force yourself to stay awake?

This is called paradoxical intention, Phil explains, and it’s a technique commonly used to treat insomnia.

“This technique encourages people to try and stay awake longer. It’s a normal form of psychological challenge and your sleep thought process to reduce sleep stress and anxiety,” he says.

“Usually, when we worry about something, we overthink the problem, and this can aggravate the problem and, therefore, create more anxiety.

“If you can change your mindset from focusing on falling asleep, you’ll find that falling asleep happens more naturally.”

Keep track of your day’s activities in chronological order

Another way to sleep earlier is to think about what you did that day – but in chronological order.

Phil explains: “Sometimes the mental effort to remember makes you sleepy.

Start with what you did in the morning and work your way up throughout the day.

Listen to white noise

You may have heard of this technique working on babies, but it looks like it works on adults as well.

“Listening to white noise can help block thoughts that might make you anxious and keep you awake,” says Phil. This can also mask loud sounds that stimulate your brain.

There are plenty of apps you can download that offer white noise, meaning you can fall asleep easily.

Program your mind with a sleep ritual

Okay, the method itself sounds pretty simple, but the idea is that you should only do an activity or ritual when you’re ready for bed.

An example of this might be rubbing your nose for 10 seconds every night or something else entirely – nothing is off-limits and nothing is too heavy.

Whatever it is, this will help program your mind/body to go to sleep.
