Bodies of two men found butchered in their own homes in ‘homophobic dating app’ murders as man, 22, was arrested

DETECTIVES have launched a double murder investigation after two men were butchered in ‘homophobic’ attacks in their own homes.

Aidan Moffitt, 41, and Michael Snee, 58, were brutally murdered in their own homes just two miles from each other on Monday and Tuesday.

Gardai probe weather the sReadings are homophobic in nature, with a third man coming forward and claiming he was attacked.

Armed police officers arrested the man in coordinated raids yesterday and officers are continuing to interrogate him.

He is believed to be praying when he was arrested by police at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officials believe both men met their killer on a popular gay dating app and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The tragic Aidan was last seen alive on Sunday afternoon and police discovered his body around 8.30pm on Monday

Officials have confirmed the auctioneer suffered “significant injuries” to his body and neck.

Michael’s mutilated remains were then found by officers at his home around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken said: “Michael and Aidan were well known and respected in this community.

“They were attacked and murdered in their own homes. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and indeed their friends and the wider Sligo community at this time.

“We remain open to this investigation. I continue to appeal to the public for support in this regard.

“We are actively investigating whether these killings have a hate-related motive.

“A Garda Síochána will endeavor to collect all available evidence and ultimately it will be up to a court to decide the motivation behind these appalling crimes.

“Gardaí is also investigating whether Michael and Aidan met their attacker online.

“I urge anyone who may have been subjected to unwanted advances or assaulted or otherwise assaulted to contact the Sligo Garda Station Operations Center.”

Officers also confirmed they are investigating a third incident after a man complained that he had been assaulted on Saturday.

He reportedly did not give officers the exact details of his meeting with his assailant, but did reveal more information after the discovery of Mr Moffitt’s remains.

Both bodies were removed from the scene and taken to Sligo University Hospital for autopsy.

Garda technical experts continue to search for forensic evidence at the scene of both murders today.

Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan, a close friend of Mr Moffitt, said a “cloud of worry and fear” now hangs over the town.

He added: “The community is stunned. The last few days had brought great concern to the area.

“People were trying to come to terms with what had happened – the murders of two men and the other attack where a man was beaten so badly he lost an eye.

“The level of violence is absolutely shocking. It’s something Sligo isn’t used to.”

Paying tribute to Mr Moffitt, friend Blaine Gaffney said: “He was a very, very intelligent, honest and caring person who was an all-around good guy.

“He was a very caring person, very dignified and what happened was not dignified in any way and it’s just awful.

“It’s pretty terrifying, it’s pretty scary. There has been talk of a lot of things that have happened in Sligo over the past four days, but this particular matter would be really, really scary that someone so dignified could be treated so undignified.

“And considering that it has to do with hate, you would never say the words hate and Aidan, he lit the world.”

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said: “I am deeply disturbed to read of the two alleged murders in Sligo.”

Limerick Pride announced a vigil in honor of murder victims Mr Moffitt and Mr Snee.

The vigil will take place at Arthur’s Quay Park on Monday 18 April at 6pm.
