EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (CBSNewYork) – Black Friday Shoppers were out early to get some of the best deals.

CBS2’s Christina fans caught up with those outside American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New shirt. Young people say clothes and shoes seem to be the most popular choices this year.

It starts to look like… 2019, as businesses are expected to welcome more than 158 million shoppers over Black Friday weekend.

One shopper told Fan: “Foot Locker, Champs, Foot Action”.

“Fit the shoes, instant steal and trade, let’s go,” another added

“Limited items, limited items,” said another.

Toy store owner Maryam Al Hammami said that despite product shortages and soaring prices due to a troubled supply chain, she is expecting a promising season.

“I increased my sales 100% from 2019,” she said.

Analysts say a combination of job growth, stimulus checks and the monthly child tax credit is helping consumers weather the highest inflation in three decades.

“The price is high, but people don’t really seem to mind that. In fact, our final retail sales report showed strong spending across multiple categories, which even led to higher prices,” reported CBS News business analyst Jill Schlesinger. “So I think it’s going to be a strong season.”

Especially strong for in-person shopping, which is expected to grow by more than 14% compared to 2020.

Last year, brick and mortar stores struggle to attract the crowd. Lines at Macy’s Herald Square were so short on Black Friday, shoppers were shocked to realize they were first.

“Because of the virus, a lot of people have stayed at home. That’s why I’m first in line,” said Anita Fritz, of Jamaica, Queens. “They should give us some presents.”

One trend that has caught retailers and police off guard is high-grade theft rash. Officials say organized crime groups are running in, smashing counters, and stealing luxury items, then selling them online.

For local shoppers looking to buy turkey during Thanksgiving, the American Dream Mall has more than 200 stores and plenty of attractions. The first 500 people through the gate will get free tickets to those attractions.
