PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One candidate dropped out and another has entered the broad race to succeed Representative Mike Doyle, who is retiring later this year.

Come over, Professor Jerry Dickinson. Get out of the way, Representative Summer Lee. Give it up, democracy activist Steve Irwin. The newest candidate is the youngest at the age of 28. Bhavini Patel says she is the right choice to replace Doyle.

Bhavini’s mother emigrated here from India and Patel, now 28, grew up in Monroeville helping a single mother operate food trucks before attending the University of Pittsburgh and Oxford University in the UK, returning home to founded her own online company, served as a Biden delegate, and was subsequently elected to the Edgewood council — all while in her 20s.

Patel: I don’t really know the data about that. That is a great question. It’s not something I’m necessarily focused on. When I talk to voters, one of the first things that come to mind is relativity. I think people are very excited about my lived experiences.

Patel says her experience and expertise in the new economy will help her lead Pittsburgh into the future.

“We need a representative who has been in the innovation economy, understands it, and can make sure everyone has access to it,” says Patel. “That’s what I’m really excited about.”

With former Brentwood council member Stephanie Fox dropping out of the race, Democrats will choose from among candidates whose views range from Democratic socialists to progressives and moderates. As for Patel’s place on the spectrum, she said she identifies with the incumbent.

“I think Congressman Doyle has done a remarkable job and to have the honor to continue the work he has done, that is unbelievable to me,” Patel said.

Plenty of options for Democrats in a congressional district are still unfinished. It potentially includes most of Pittsburgh, the eastern suburbs, some suburbs of South Hills, and the Mon Valley – and is overwhelmingly Democrats, which is why the primaries of the Democratic Party this spring is very important.
