The silver Renault Clio boarded the pavement of Breitscheidplatz, the German capital’s main shopping mall, just before 10.30am local time (9.30am BST).

The video recorded afterwards shows the alleged driver being taken away by the police.

The chilling video shows a man in a yellow T-shirt and dark blue tracksuit with yellow sneakers being led away.

Before being put in the back seat of an unmarked police car, he is seen yelling in German, “Help me! Help me!” Help me!”

A bystander filming the arrest replies, “Why do you need help, you just killed you idiot.”

He then calls out an “A******e” to the suspected driver.

The Berlin police confirmed the arrest of a 29-year-old German-Armenian living in Berlin.

It is still unclear whether he drove into the crowd on purpose or whether it was an accident.

The unnamed man is still being questioned by police.

After the accident, the driver is said to have tried to flee before brave passers-by arrested him and handed him over to a police officer who happened to be nearby, who took him into custody until his colleagues arrived.

BILD reports that the man was known to the police because of previous property crimes.

According to German reporter Antje Hildebrandt, two teachers were leading a school trip from Hesse in central Germany when the car crashed into them in front of an H&M store.

Police confirmed the car mounted the pavement at the corner of Rankestrasse and Tauentzienstrasse and hit pedestrians before turning onto the street and then back onto the pavement a further 200 meters and crashing into a department store.

The crash happened in front of the historic Kaiser Wilhelm Church near the city’s zoo – across from the site of the 2016 Christmas market terrorist attack.

Actor John Barrowman, who happened to be at the scene at the time of the crash, shared dramatic video from the crash site.

The Doctor Who star tweeted: “We believe we witnessed a terrorist attack here in Berlin. We’re not sure there’s a lot of bodies everywhere. Storefront that stretches three blocks is pretty awful.”

In a subsequent video, he said he saw a “dead body in the middle of the road” and a number of people “walking with limp and injuries.” Berlin crash: dramatic moment Suspect screams ‘help, help’ as he is arrested after ‘plowing car into crowd and killing one’
