BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Belleville police are searching for a gunman they believe shot a woman in a near-fatal tragedy.
According to police, the woman was shot in the head and taken to the hospital. She is recovering at home on Wednesday afternoon. The bullet wound turned out to be a graze wound.
It happened at the Trover Food Company in the 9200 block of Main West Street around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Police said the gunman was waiting at a bus stop and he demanded the woman’s wallet when she arrived at work and got out of the car. They compete for money; he shot her and ran away with it.
Signal Hill Elementary School is less than half a mile from the incident. The school was locked down for about 40 minutes until police were able to cordon off the area to make sure the suspect was no longer around.
Police posted a description of the suspect on their Facebook page. He is described as “A black male of late or early 20s appearance, approximately 5’7″ to 5’9″ and thin, wearing blue jeans, a black jacket with a hood, and shorts. racket.”
According to police, the suspect fled the scene while walking west on Main Street. A K-9 from Caseyville Police arrived at the scene to assist. The Belleville Police Detective and Crime Unit responded to begin an investigation. The suspect, in this case, is still big.
