Barcelona coach Xavi opens the door for Robert Lewandowski’s transfer by insisting the striker’s age won’t be an issue

Barca have been linked with a move from Bayern Munich forward Lewandowski, 33.

The Poland international and 2021 Ballon d’Or runner-up would significantly strengthen Xavi’s attacking ranks.

And Xavi has insisted he is open to signing veterans despite trying to build a youthful, competitive squad.

Xavi brought Dani Alves, 38, back to the club on a free transfer.

The Barca and Spain legend said: “I signed Dani Alves when I was 38.

“It’s not the age, it’s the performance. The players take so much care of themselves and are becoming more professional every year.

“[Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, [Luka] Modric, Dani Alves, they all performed very well at important clubs.

“Kristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi too. Age is not the priority. If it improves us, that’s the most important thing.”

A move to Barca could tempt Lewandowski, who has expressed his desire for a new challenge.

The serial goalscorer has informed Bayern that he will not renew his contract.

Lewandowki said: “I can confirm that I spoke to Hasan [Salihamidzic] and informed him that the decision had been made and that I would not be extending my contract with FC Bayern.

“Both sides have to think about the future. It is best if we find the best solution for both sides.

“I said to Salihamidzic that if an offer comes, then we have to think about it – also for the club. Both sides have to think about the future. That’s all I can say.”
