Barcelona 3 Elche 0: Robert Lewandowski scores twice and Memphis Depay scores as Xavi’s side take the lead

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI brushed aside his midweek gap against former club Bayern Munich by scoring twice against Elche.

The £42.5m summer signing helped Xavi’s side climb to the top of La Liga ahead of tomorrow’s Madrid derby.

Lewandowski, 34, now has EIGHT goals in just six league games for his new side and 11 in eight games in all competitions.

Elche was reduced to 10 men in less than 15 minutes, defender Gonzalo Verdu being shown red straight away for putting Lewandowski on target with the striker.

After loosening his lines against his old team in midweek, Lewandowski couldn’t miss after 33 minutes when Alejandro Balde squared for him when he was three yards from goal.

Memphis Depay added four minutes before the break, with Balde again providing the assist.

The Dutchman showed impressive strength to parry a defender when the ball was kicked into his feet and nifty footwork to roll it onto his left foot before slamming into the ceiling of the net.

The home side thought they had scored again two minutes later but Gavi’s shot was ruled out for offside.

However, Barca would not fail to score and it hardly looked like they were breaking a sweat en route to their fifth league win of the season.

Sure enough, the third one came minutes after the reboot.

And as only the best strikers are, Lewandowski was in the right place at the right time for the third.

A scramble in the penalty area sent the ball falling to him from eight yards and he made no mistake to sweep home for his second goal.

That’s five wins out of six for Xavi’s side and the perfect way to reflect Tuesday’s disappointing result in Munich.

Barca end the day top of the table, a point ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Although Carlo Ancelotti’s side can return to the top if they win tomorrow’s derby against Atletico.
