Baby-faced Russian killer sentenced to life in prison after murdering grandpa in Ukraine’s first war crimes trial

A BABY-FACED Russian killer was yesterday sentenced to life in prison for killing a Ukrainian grandfather in cold blood.

Tank Commander Sergeant Vadim Shishimarin, 21, stood silently with his head bowed in a glass cage in a Kiev court as the verdict was handed down.

It is the first war crimes trial in Ukraine since Vladimir Putin invaded the country.

Shishimarin shot 62-year-old Oleksandr Shelipov with his Kalashnikov rifle “while following orders” four days after the start of the war in the village of Chupakhivka in the north-eastern Sumy region.

He opened fire when an officer warned the unarmed Ukrainian – who was speaking on his mobile phone – not to reveal his position.

Judge Serhiy Agafonov branded the order a “criminal order” from a senior soldier.

He added: “The court has ruled that Vadim Evgenyevich Shishimarin is guilty and has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Since the crime committed is a crime against peace, security, humanity and the international legal order, the court sees no possibility of imposing a shorter sentence.”

The shaved squaddie admitted his guilt and asked forgiveness from his victim’s widow, Kateryna Shelipova.

Kateryna refused to acquit the killer – but has said she is open to his being swapped out for a fighter from Ukraine’s Azov regiment captured after the Mariupol Steelworks siege.

The grieving Kateryna had confronted Shishimarin during the landmark trial, asking him, “Tell me, how did you feel when you killed my husband? Do you regret this crime?”

He replied: “Yes. I admit guilt. I understand that you cannot forgive me. I ask for forgiveness.”

But the widow pressed on: “Please tell me why did you come here?

“To protect us? Protect us from who? Did you protect me from my husband you killed?”

The trial is the first of many planned as the number of war crimes reported in Ukraine surpassed 13,000 yesterday.

Russia has denied attacking civilians or being involved in war crimes, and Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said his government is “looking at ways to protect Shishimarin.”

The killer’s lawyers said after yesterday’s hearing that he plans to appeal the verdict.
