Baby boy ‘starved to death by drug addict mother who didn’t check on him for 21 HOURS after leaving dead in filthy house’

A BABY boy was allegedly starved to death by his drugged mother who hadn’t checked on him for 21 hours as she was on a drug spree.

Eight-month-old Dexter Wilton was allegedly starved of food and water before his death while his mother was high on meth, a court has heard.

The tot was found dead on June 21, 2019 at a home in Ipswich, southwest of Brisbane, Australia.

His mother Natalie Jade Whitehead, 36, and her partner Andrew William Campbell, 42, were charged with murder and faced Brisbane High Court on Friday.

The court heard how drug addict Whitehead put her son to bed at 8:30 p.m., got high with her partner, and didn’t check in with the volunteer tot until 5:30 a.m. the next day.

Judge Lincoln Crowley told the Brisbane Times that Whitehead allegedly first dumped her syringes in her neighbor’s trash before calling emergency services.

“She and Mr. Campbell bathed the children, changed them into fresh diapers and threw away the garbage bag [in a neighbour’s bin] with dirty baby clothes and diapers,” the judge said.

“[They told] the neighbor not to tell the police about it. The bag also contained dirty syringes and other drug paraphernalia.”

Prosecutor Matt Le Grand told the court the house was found in “a state of squalor” with Whitehead holding Dexter and crying on a mattress.

The court heard an experienced pediatrician provide evidence that Dexter was allegedly malnourished for several days.

“Whitehead must have known, by inference, that her child was likely to die from lack of care,” Le Grand said.

Whitehead was charged with murder and misconduct with a dead body, as well as six counts of failing to provide essential essentials.

Whitehead was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm – a crime unrelated to her son’s death.

Campbell was also charged with murder and one count of misconduct involving a dead body, and four counts of failing to provide essential essentials.

Judge Crowley denied Whitehead’s request for bail.

Whitehead and Campbell will stand trial at Ipswich Magistrates Court on July 27.
