State law requires officials to give taxpayers a refund if the reserves, excluding education, total more than 12.5 percent of the general endowment.

The state has about $4 billion in reserves — the equivalent of 23 percent of its general fund.

Last Indiana residents get an automatic tax refund in 2013.

Officials revealed in July that the refund would total $545.3 million.

However, the state is still not sure how much taxpayers will receive, according to Indianapolis star.

“Despite a pandemic, Indiana exceeded all expectations and ended the state’s fiscal year with an unprecedented amount of reserves,” Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb said.

“We have an obligation to get this money back into the hands of the taxpayers instead of leaving it in the hands of (the government).”

And, the state will work with about 910,000 low-income Americans who pay taxes but don’t file.

Payment may be requested by April 2022.

It’s possible that future tax refunds could be automatically issued when state revenues exceed the $644 million target between July and November.
