The attacker got into her vehicle and drove away, prompting the mother to try to stop the thief, but she was unsuccessful.

“She definitely heard me. I yelled at her to stop and that my kids were in the car,” she told the Daily Mail.

“She kept driving. We drove a good distance… she swerved so I would fall off.”

Maldonado ran back to the supermarket, not realizing that her foot was broken, and prompted the clerk to call the police.

The woman’s six-year-old daughter and eleven-month-old son were in the vehicle.

“I didn’t care what happened to the car. I just wanted my kids back,” Maldonado said.

The Hobbs Police Department was able to locate the car and found the suspect had left the six-year-old at an intersection before attempting to evade police.

Maldonado believes the suspect threw her daughter out of the car because the girl had a phone and probably thought the police could have tracked her.

The mother said her daughter Ma’Rey was devastated after the ordeal, but that some Good Samaritans took care of her and called the police.

The suspect was identified as Regina Castillo, 29, who left the car and tried to run from police.

Castillo was found hiding behind a pickup truck and arrested.

She faces charges in connection with the carjacking, but police determined she had three active warrants for her arrest.

Castillo has faced charges including no-shows for identity concealment, shoplifting and no-shows for traffic violations.

Her criminal history shows that she was charged with assaulting a household member, two counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, shoplifting and forgery.
