AT LEAST nine people have died and 20 people were injured in a stampede at a music festival in Guatemala.

Thousands of concertgoers attended the Central American Independence Fair known as Xelafer, which has been suspended for the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Festival-goers described horror scenes of a “human avalanche” that left many crushed, with fears the death toll will rise.

According to news reports from Guatemala, two of the nine deaths confirmed so far were children.

Held in the Guatemalan city of Quetzaltenango, the festival features hundreds of activities and parades to commemorate Guatemala’s declaration of independence.

What triggered the rush is not yet known.
