Horror images from the scene show dozens of blood-covered bodies strewn on the ground outside the daycare.

It is believed that 23 children, two teachers and a police officer are among those killed.

Police officers identified the suspect as Police Lieutenant Panya Khamrab, 34, who was from a nearby police station.

It was reported that the officer had been fired from the force before going on the killing spree.

According to police, he drove home and after the horror attack shot his wife and child before shooting himself.

Children are understood to be sleeping in the daycare when the attacker opened fire.

The gun ownership rate in Thailand is high compared to some other countries in the region.

But the official figures don’t include large quantities of illegal weapons, many of which have been imported across the porous borders by torn neighbors over the years.

Mass shootings are rare, but in 2020 a soldier angered by a real estate deal gone awry killed at least 29 and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations.
