At least 27 people are dead after a trailer they were traveling in overturned and plunged into a pond in India.
Another 20 were hospitalized when the tractor they were traveling on lost control and fell into the water.
The group of 40 adults and children were visiting a temple in Uttar Pradesh when the tragedy struck.
The passengers – who were from the same village – were taken to a hospital in nearby Bheetergaon.
Terrifying footage showed locals rushing to retrieve survivors and dead from the pond in pitch black time.
Once children were seen being carried in the arms of volunteers.
The tractor lost control while returning from Chandrika Devi Temple in Unnao.
It is understood the group were visiting the temple to take part in a “secular” ceremony that involves shaving the first hairs off a baby’s head, according to the Hindustan Times.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sadness at the loss of life.
Modi had announced the families of the deceased would each receive £2,200 in compensation.
“I am dismayed by the tractor trolley mishap in Kanpur. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their nearest and dearest. Prayers with the injured,” Modi tweeted.
“The local administration provides those affected with every conceivable help.”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged locals not to use tractors to transport people.
“The traffic accident in Kanpur district is very heartbreaking,” he said.
“The district judge and other senior officials have been ordered to be on the scene immediately and conduct war-based relief and rescue operations and arrange for appropriate treatment of the injured.”
The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
