At least 11 people have died and eight people are missing after a ferry sank.

The ship was carrying 82 passengers from Marajo Island to Belem, Brazil, when it began to flood with water.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene and were able to save 63 people.

But at least 11 were killed and eight people are missing after Thursday’s incident.

Divers, at least nine ships and a helicopter participated in the search for the missing, which lasted until nightfall.

Authorities in Para said the boat was not authorized to operate inter-city passenger transport services and had departed from a secret port.

A second video shows survivors in the murky river holding on to the sinking ship.

The Brazilian Navy has announced that it will examine the wreck.

The ill-fated ferry was en route from the village of Camara to the riverside town of Belem when it sank near the island of Cotijuba around 9.30am.

The boat, named Santa Lourdes, belonged to the company M. Souza Navegacao, which had already been reported for illegal operation, sources said.

The man in charge of the ship has been identified as Marcos de Souza Oliveira.

Investigators said he survived the sinking but was on the run and has not yet been found.

According to reports, the Belem Ministry of Health is treating the survivors.

The search for the missing continued today.
