A further 80,000 live in longer-term accommodation, which could cost an additional £550million a year.

The total cost of asylum has reached £2 billion for the first time, statistics revealed this summer.

Tory MP Tom Hunt said last night: “The level of money being spent is worrying.”

The number of migrants crossing the Channel to get to Britain this year has reached 30,515 after another 667 arrived here on Wednesday.

Alp Mehmet, chair of Migration Watch UK, which authored the report, urged incoming home secretary Suella Braverman to act.

He said: “As illegal boat arrivals have increased sharply over the summer, the number of people staying in hotels is likely to have increased as well.

“This is now costing taxpayers, who are already battered, horrendous sums.

“The Home Secretary must now show the determination needed to deal with the costly mess.”

THE SUN SAYS

THE Open Borders Brigade pretends that asylum seekers are not a real burden.

But we now know what that burden is: a staggering £2billion a year, of which £1.3billion are hotel bills.

That number is set to increase as more than 30,000 illegal migrants have landed on our beaches so far this year.

Our new government vows to finally end this scandal. How exactly?

Liz Truss didn’t even mention it to President Macron in New York. Why?
