Aston Villa boss Unai Emery BEATS his own player Emiliano Martinez for his performance in the 4-2 defeat by Arsenal

However, the Gunners were quick to counterattack and score a fourth goal – leaving the Brazilian winger free to tap into an unguarded goal.

After the game, Emery admitted he was unhappy with Martinez’s decision.

“Of course our schedule is really high quality and they have to make the decision on the pitch,” he told talkSPORT.

“In the last action he decided to go offensively to the corner, but I don’t like that.

“But I didn’t say anything to him, either before or after, because in my whole career I’ve never told our goalkeepers to do it and the statistical data speaks against the teams who walk with the goalkeeper more than goals are awarded shoot.”

When asked if he told the shotstopper not to do it again, Emery replied, “He can study for the next few games.”

Martinez didn’t enjoy the best afternoons against his old employers.

With the score 2-2, a long-range shot from Arsenal’s Jorginho shot off the woodwork – before hitting the keeper’s head and bouncing into the net.

In the first half, Aston Villa looked set to hand Arsenal their third league defeat in four games – as they went 2-1 ahead.

But a spirited performance from Mikel Arteta’s men in the second half helped them climb back to the top of the Premier League.

Oleksandr Zinchenko’s low shot brought the visitors level again in the 61st minute.

A late upset in the 93rd and 97th minutes spared Arsenal’s blush after Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah missed chances to end the game.
