Barty became the first Australian woman since Chris O’Neil in 1978 to win the opening race of the year.

But she was put to work by her determined American opponent, who appeared in her first Grand Slam final.

Barty finished the first part of the competition when she put aside any sense of pressure in front of the noisy crowd at home.

Momentum then swung wildly in Collins’ direction and it looked like she was about to force a third decider.

However, Wimbledon champion Barty held on and soon celebrated his victory in Melbourne Park.
