Ahead of Sunday’s clash with Arsenal, Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp said: “We have a new injury, it’s Arthur Melo.

“In the last session before the Rangers game, he only injured a muscle in a normal situation.

“We’ll have to wait for further assessments to know exactly how long it will take, but he’s out.”

According to The Athletic, Arthur will undergo surgery this weekend that will keep him out of action until 2023.

Liverpool paid a £4million loan fee to sign Arthur for the season.

But he has only played 13 minutes so far, coming on as a late substitute in the disastrous 4-1 defeat at Napoli.

He has also been on the bench in games against Ajax, Everton and Brighton.

To build fitness, the former Barcelona star played 63 minutes of a 1-0 EFL Trophy loss to Rochdale.

Fans couldn’t believe their eyes as the game developed as player-manager Jay Spearing replaced Arthur.

He also played for Liverpool’s under-21s in PL2.

Liverpool have an option to make Arthur’s loan permanent at the end of the season for £33m.
