Arteta: Our aim and rhythm was much better in the second half – Arseblog News

Mikel Arteta spoke to BT Sport after being with him 2-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League this afternoon.

Here’s what he had to say.

The second half is what you want, you’re waiting for a spark.

Yes, in the first half we took the game where we wanted to but not a real threat and understood how we needed to attack that. [defensive] block. We lacked a bit of composure in the last third, we could have played the last ball better, shooting – I don’t know how many times we shot without hitting the target!

In the second half we changed a few things. Our rhythm, our purpose was much better and we started creating opportunities. We scored two goals and it was clear that the game was under control.

Saka changed wings and scored

It’s great, and that’s what you need. Some creativity, some spark in the final third versus a really low block, and once that happened the spaces were different and we were able to score the second as well.

A smart substitution – Martinelli

That’s not being smart, that’s what he deserves. Gabi is a joy to work with, the way he trains, whether he plays or not, he deserves a chance and he is a goal threat. And what he achieved today is not an easy goal!

Round one – you’re pushing them to increase the tempo

It’s too slow. Our first ball with the centre-backs was too slow, we didn’t have enough threat in the back and we didn’t capture certain spaces that they defended well. Once we explained that better, we attacked much better.

About Arsene Wenger, and want him back

I think everyone who works here and me personally, what I feel for Arsene Wenger is gratitude. Me, the first because without him, I wouldn’t be here. So what I’m saying is, that I think he’d enjoy being around. I know he needs his space, but being around and having a feeling people love him will be great for him, and the rest I don’t know what will happen.
