Only Arsenal’s second ever Italian outfield player

Jorginho will sign for Arsenal on deadline day – becoming only the club’s second Italian outfield signing.

Striker Arturo Lupoli made some first-team appearances in the 2005/06 season after emerging from Arsenal’s youth team.

Lupoli joined their academy from Parma U17 in 2003 and proved a prolific goalscorer.

He scored 45 goals in 23 academy games and impressed the coaches with his form.

While he failed to repeat that level in the first team and failed to secure a first-team spot, Lupoli scored a brace against Everton in the League Cup.

The striker was later on loan at Derby, Norwich and Sheffield United before spending most of the rest of his career in the Italian lower leagues.

In fact, Arsenal have had more Italian goalkeepers than outfield players in the club’s history.

But the likes of Vito Mannone and Emiliano Viviano were never regulars.
