Arsenal still firmly in the race for a place in the top 4 of the Premier League this season. The Gunners are currently sixth in the standings, one point behind the fourth-placed team West Ham United. However, they played two fewer games than the Hammers.
On that note, here’s a look at the key Arsenal transfer stories for February 12, 2022:
Darren Bent urges Arsenal to keep Alexandre Lacazette
Darren Bent has urged Arsenal to keep Alexandre Lacazette. The Frenchman is in the final six months of his current contract, but the north London side have yet to enter negotiations for a new deal.
The 30-year-old has registered 193 appearances for the Premier League side so far, scoring 70 goals and assisting 33 more. However, manager Mikel Arteta doesn’t have Lacazette in his plans.
The Spaniards gave permission Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang join Barcelona this winter. Arteta wants to bring in a new No. 9 to lead the squad in January. His main target, however, is that Dusan Vlahovic has opted to join Juventus instead, while Alexander Isak no move has been made.
Arteta is expected to return to the Swede this summer, with Lacazette expected to leave the Emirates. However, Bent believes the Frenchman deserves a new contract at the club.
To speak on talkSPORT, the English player said that the 30-year-old Lacazette would be a good plan B for the club.
“I will give him a new contract. As well as the cover. Even if we bring other people in. Maybe not your nine because you need your nine to score. Don’t leave him in vain and have no plan B. Sign him up now, and then worry about disliking others. Arsenal cannot make that mistake,” said Bent.
Bukayo Saka suggested to stay at Emirates by Kevin Campbell
Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell is confident that Bukayo Saka will extend his stay at the Emirates. The 20-year-old’s current contract expires in 2024, but there has been no talk of an extension yet.
Talking to Football InsiderCampbell points out that this summer would be the ideal time to tie Saka down to a new deal.
“Listen, Saka will be sorted; this is 100%. Make no mistake about it. Man City and Liverpool can keep an eye on him all they want. He’s an Arsenal player, and the club will do Campbell said.
“In the summer it will be two years. That’s the time you have to extend. Arsenal don’t want to go down the path where a player has 18 months left on his contract again. It doesn’t make sense. Sort it out this Summer. Make him want and make him feel special. He’s one of the club’s top players and let’s reward him for it,” Campbell continued. .
Gunners get a boost when chasing Youri Tielemans
Arsenal have been beefed up in their pursuit of Youri Tielemans. Based on SunLeicester City are ready to let the Belgian player leave on a discounted contract. The Gunners are looking to strengthen their midfield this year, and keep an eye on the 24-year-old.
