The investigations against the 30-year-old even involved alleged involvement of the Albanian mafia.

However, after several investigations, the matter was finally closed as it was believed that Xhaka had no answer on the case.

The Switzerland international received his card as the Gunners went 3-0 up.

Xhaka was then cautioned by Andre Marriner for wasting time on a free-kick in the 86th minute.

Suspicious betting patterns have been uncovered in connection with the booking, including a £52,000 bet placed on him receiving a warning.

For the next six months, the FA investigated the alleged crime before referring the matter to the NCA, which has now dropped the case due to lack of evidence.

Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2016 and has made 295 appearances for the north London side since then.

However, his time at the Emirates is likely to come to an end this summer.

The Swiss international is said to be on the verge of returning to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen.

With Arsenal likely to receive £15m for Xhaka, Mikel Arteta will urge club bosses to bring in midfield reinforcements.

West Ham star Declan Rice is heavily linked with a transfer.

However, recent reports suggest talks between the two clubs will not start until June.
