The 25-year-old knocked in the 64thth Substituted in the minute of the Samba Boys’ last match in the World Cup group stage – a 1-0 defeat by Cameroon.

And after a scan, Brazilian medics confirmed his trip to Qatar was over before the round of 16 match against South Korea.

Doubts remain as to whether Jesus will need surgery or how long he will be out of action, with some reports assuming THREE months.

That picture will become clearer when the ex-Manchester City striker arrives at London Colney on Monday morning for a further examination of his knee.

What is certain is that he will miss Arsenal’s Boxing Day clash with West Ham as well as their New Year’s Eve trip to Brighton and possibly a January 3 game against Newcastle.

He will then be in a race against time to rejoin Mikel Arteta’s squad for two crucial back-to-back games at rivals Tottenham and later this month at home to Manchester United.

Arsenal currently sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League, having lost just once.

But they will now rely on backup striker Eddie Nketiah to score the goals the north London club have seen the Prem rage with so far.

Jesus is the second Arsenal player to exit the World Cup early. Defender Ben White leaves the English camp for personal reasons.

Following news of his injury, Jesus tweeted: “If there was a schedule and I could see you and tell you something I would say ‘Gabriel you are a winner.’

“Thank you to everyone who sent messages of support and affection.”

Brazil coach Tite also hit back at claims that suggested he knew Jesus had an injury BEFORE playing against Cameroon.

He said: “I don’t like nasty lies and at no point have we played for a win if we have put a player in danger.

“The liars, the haters out there – do something different and stop spreading fake news.

“Arsenal have a great medical department, Brazil have a great medical department and we are personally responsible and ethical.

“I’m very sorry for Gabriel and yesterday we spoke to Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Neymar and (assistant) Cesar Sampiao – who has lived with the experience of being removed from the team.

“Not to take away the pain because obviously we can’t, just to make them feel better, empower them and participate as much as possible.” Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus on flight back to London to find out extent of injury amid fears he may miss THREE MONTHS
