ARSENAL are reportedly trying to get ahead of Manchester United in the race to land Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez.
The 24-year-old is a target for both Premier League sides as the race for the Argentina international’s services heats up.
Mikel Arteta’s side already had a £25m approach for the Eredivisie champions-rejected centre-back.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils have spotted the 2021 Copa America winner as an alternative for his Ajax teammate Jurrien Timber.
It has been claimed that the Dutchman was set to be reunited with former boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, only for him to snub a move after talks with Dutch gaffer Louis van Gaal.
And if United aren’t quick enough, they could miss Martinez’s signature if the Gunners open new negotiations with his representative.
Arteta is a huge admirer of Martinez’s versatility as the defender can also function as a left-back and defensive midfielder.
And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the Spaniard’s hunt for the ex-Newell’s Old Boys ace.
On his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Arsenal want Lisandro Martinez.
“They had new contacts with his agent and after an opening offer from Ajax was rejected.

“But at the moment there is no new offer. Arsenal’s turn.
“Arsenal want Lisandro Martinez, but Manchester United have also mentioned his name internally.
“Lisandro is someone to watch in the coming weeks. Ajax want around 45 to 50 million euros [£38m-£43m].”
Should Martinez join Arsenal, he will be a challenge for left-back Gabriel Magalhaes.
And he would also likely cover for left-back Kieran Tierney with backup Nuno Tavares, pending a loan offer from Marseille.
