Arsenal outcast Bernd Leno is looking to exit the Premier League while Benfica eye an £8.5million summer transfer

BENFICA are reportedly ready to offer Bernd Leno an escape from his Arsenal nightmare in a potential £8.5million deal.

The Germany goalkeeper has been limited to just four Premier League games this season, with Aaron Ramsdale ousting him as No. 1.

It only lasted three games of the season before Leno lost his starting spot under Mikel Arteta.

After losing 5-0 away at Manchester City on August 28, Leno had to wait until March 19 before making his next appearance in the top flight.

Leno kept a clean sheet in the absence of the then-injured Ramsdale as he helped the Gunners beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the Midlands.

This is expected to be his last appearance for the north London team, with the England international expected to appear in Sunday’s final against Everton.

Leno may not even be Arsenal’s No. 2 next season as the club have already signed American ace Matt Turner from MLS side New England Revolution.

According to Correio da Manha, Benfica have emerged as a potential destination for the nine-time international.

They claim that new boss Roger Schmidt has made the player’s signing his top priority as he eyes a reunion with him at the Estadio da Luz.

Schmidt and Leno worked together at Bayer Leverkusen for three years before he joined Arsenal for £22million in 2018.

With Leno’s contract due to expire in 2023, Arsenal know they need to redeem this summer lest they lose him next year for nothing.

The Portuguese news outlet have claimed the Gunners are ready to part ways with Leno should they receive a fee in the region of £8.5million.

It remains to be seen whether Benfica will match Arsenal’s asking price and whether the keeper would be willing to take a £100,000-a-week pay cut.

Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Leno but it has been said he will turn down a move to St James’ Park.

A return to the Bundesliga has also been envisaged, with ex-club Leverkusen presumably keeping an eye on their situation.

Leno confirmed last month he is ready to leave Arsenal should he remain a marginal figure.
