Arteta relieved about Saliba

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he had concerns about the relationship he had with William Saliba when he was first appointed manager.

He told Sky Sports: “I’m really happy. I was worried at many moments because it was really difficult how the relationship was at the beginning.

“We bought him, we loaned him out first because that was part of the deal. It came back, we didn’t think it was ready and then sent it back on loan.

“A player with that potential who already had that recognition externally… how would that affect our relationship?

“But we believed in it and I was convinced that the time would be of much more use to him than staying here.

“And the moment I saw things that signaled to me what he could do, we had no doubt that he was a player for us.

“He was really humble and determined to say, ‘Okay, I can put that aside, I see’. Now he’s performing here and he was extraordinary.”
