Arsenal need to cut their £8m losses at Nuno Tavares and sign a new left-back this summer

ARSENAL need to cut losses at Nuno Tavares and sign a new left-back this summer to mark and compete with Kieran Tierney.

The Portugal Under-21 ace joined the Gunners for £8million in the summer of 2021 but has failed to impress.

Most of Tavares’ minutes passed without starting left-back Tierney.

The Scotland international has missed 13 games so far this season with separate ankle and knee injuries and is expected to miss the rest of this season.

Tavares was sent off in the first half in the FA Cup defeat by Nottingham Forest and has proved particularly unreliable on defence.

Due to his lack of defensive awareness, he was arguably responsible for two of the goals in the 3-0 defeat by Crystal Palace, where he was substituted at half-time.

Tavares was even dropped and midfielder Granit Xhaka was ordered to play in defense in the Brighton defeat.

And at the London Stadium against Moyes’ Europa League semi-finalists West Ham, things were more similar in a 2-1 win.

Moyes instructed full-back Vladimir Coufal to press high on Tavares and force errors.

The Czech was enjoying himself and grabbed an assist to equalize from Jarrod Bowen.

Tavares lost five duels and was only able to complete one pass in 90 minutes played.

Going forward, Tavares could look electrifying at times – but his last ball ultimately let him down.

Luckily for Tavares, he’s only 22 and has time on his side to work on the defensive side of his game.

But does boss Mikel Arteta have time to wait until Arsenal return to the Champions League next year?

no He does not.

Arteta needs a reliable, solid left-back who can step in or compete with Tierney to help Arsenal rise up the Premier League table.

There is plenty of talent, both domestic and international, that could fit Arteta’s model.

Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters or Manchester City’s provider Oleksandr Zinchenko could do a job.

Long-term goal Nicolas Tagliafico, 29, could offer a good short-term solution and also has extensive experience of European competition.

It’s an area Arteta needs to address. Arsenal need to cut their £8m losses at Nuno Tavares and sign a new left-back this summer
