Arsenal legend Merson brutally claims Nketiah wouldn’t even get a start for Fulham after signing a new £100,000-a-week contract

ARSENAL legend Paul Merson has claimed Eddie Nketiah would not even be included in the FULHAM team.

The Gunners recently tied the 23-year-old to a new five-year deal as his deal was due to expire at the end of the month.

The Englishman scored five goals in Arsenal’s last seven Premier League games last season to convince Mikel Arteta and co of his skills.

But Merson remains critical of Nketiah’s talent and insists he doesn’t have what it takes to take the north London team to the Champions League.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he said: “All Arsenal have brought forward at the moment is Eddie Nketiah, who recently signed a new contract when it looked like he was leaving.

“And no disrespect to Nketiah, but Mikel Arteta needs to realize he’s not going to put you in the top four. Absolutely no chance. That’s a fact.

“Nketiah cannot lead your push into the Champions League. He’s not ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison at Everton and they almost got relegated.

“He doesn’t join Fulham before Aleksandar Mitrovic and they’ve only just been promoted.

“I don’t try him, but he doesn’t put you in the top four.”

Unlike Nketiah, forward Alexandre Lacazette left the Emirates at the end of the season when his contract with the Gunners expired.

He returned to Lyon – five years after leaving the Ligue 1 side for £46.5million.

This keeps Arsenal just ahead in the 2022-23 season as they once again prepare for European competition.

Arteta’s men narrowly missed out on Champions League spots after losing twice in their last three games – opening the door for rivals Tottenham to overtake them.

But the Gunners still qualified for the Europa League and are backed by Manchester United in the competition.

Arsenal kick off their season on the opening night of the Premier League and travel to Crystal Palace on Friday 5 August.
