Arsenal have three-man midfield transfer shortlist led by Bruno Guimaraes as Mikel Arteta hints at splashing money

ARSENAL are eyeing Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as their top transfer target in the January window, according to reports.

The Gunners are said to have had a three-man shortlist as they look to bolster their options midfield.

Based on Fabrizio RomanoJuventus man Arthur Melo is also pictured as a possible signing for Mikel Arteta – along with a third unnamed player.

But it is Guimaraes who remains the leader when Arsenal assess the possibility of him leaving the Ligue 1 side.

The 24-year-old Brazilian has a contract with Lyon until the end of the 2023-24 season.

But he was closely linked with a move to Emirates in the summer – with Guimaraes confirming interest from Arsenal.

He said: “Arsenal approached my agent, but there was no offer. My goal, and I have made it clear to Juninho, is to win a title with Lyon.”

Guimaraes has provided six assists in 23 games for the French outfit so far this season.

And he impressed in their 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday when his superb pass set up Lucas Paqueta to open the scoring.

But Arsenal may have to face fierce competition from Everton in pursuit of the cult midfielder.

Speaking last week about his squad, Arteta said: “Right now we are very, very lacking.

“We’re going to move around and look for options because we’re short there [in central midfield]. ”

And the Spaniard’s interest in his team grew after they FA Cup exit shock to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

“Today showed that we can’t afford to win against Forest in the national cup away from home,” Arteta said after the defeat to the Championship outfit.

“We weren’t good enough to have a performance we deserved to win the game.”

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool – the first leg of which takes place at Anfield on Thursday.

They then face rivals Tottenham in North London in the Premier League on Sunday.
