Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta blasts FA Cup and reveals why he pulled Nuno Tavares after just 34 minutes

MIKEL ARTETA has been left with his Arsenal side after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest on Sunday night.

The Gunners have beat 1-0 at City Ground thanks to a late substitute Lewis Grabban’s goal as the champions had reasonably secured their spot in the fourth round.

The 83rd-minute winner came after Arsenal’s poor performance – which included Nuno Tavares coming on for Kieran Tierney after just 35 minutes after a nightmarish performance.

The left-back was furious when he was substituted and Arteta revealed in his post-match interview why he made the decision.

He told ITV: “I’m just doing it to try to improve the team’s performance.

“I understand that but I had to make a decision to try to improve the team’s performance when things didn’t go the other way.”

Arsenal are still in the Carabao Cup – where they face Liverpool in the semi-final first leg on Thursday.

But the FA Cup is the only chance left for the Gunners to win some championships this season – an opportunity that has now become difficult.

And Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his first season in charge in 2020, was forced to issue an apology and apology from supporters after the game.

“They won, they scored a goal and we didn’t,” he added. “We weren’t good enough and we have to apologize for that.

“I don’t want to make excuses, I hope the team I put up will do better and when you don’t win, you’re out.

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup first leg clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday.

Arteta’s side then had just 72 hours to recover before they marched to rival Tottenham’s pitch in North London in the Premier League.
