ARSENAL are set to make another move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz in January despite two offers being rejected on transfer deadline day.
Manager Mikel Arteta is increasingly concerned about the repeated absence of injury-prone Thomas Partey and would like a quality replacement to strengthen his squad.
And he hopes Villa could finally be persuaded to benefit from Luiz in the new year rather than lose the 24-year-old Brazil international for nothing next summer.
But the Premier League leaders are likely to offer less than the £23m they agreed to pay for the player four weeks ago.
Because Luiz will have less than six months left on his Villa contract when the transfer window reopens and he has rejected all club efforts to extend his contract.
And Arsenal believe a £15m bid would be a more than reasonable price for a player who cost Villa just £12.5m when he joined them from Manchester City in 2019.
Luiz, who has barely featured in Steve Gerrard’s starting XI this season, is known to be keen on a move to the Emirates and already has a good relationship with Arteta from their time together at City.
And his signing would be a real statement of intent from Arsenal, who started the season aiming to finish in the top four but now have ambitions to challenge for the title.
But if they want to fulfill those dreams, they need to have all their key players available on a regular basis.
And Partey’s failure to overcome his frequent fitness woes is becoming a real cause for concern.

The Ghana international missed last season’s crucial last nine games as Arsenal fell apart in the run-in and lost a top-four finish to Spurs right before dying.
He has already missed half of eight games this season with persistent thigh problems and has just returned from international duty after complaining of a knee problem.
Arsenal are hoping his latest injury is not serious but are not taking any chances ahead of Saturday’s crucial derby in north London.
