Argentina were denied first place in the Fifa rankings as the late Mbappe penalty relegated them to second place and England revealed the spot

KYLIAN MBAPPE’s hat-trick denied Argentina top spot in the Fifa rankings – despite rejoicing over penalties in the World Cup final.

Mbappe’s late second penalty gave France a 3-3 draw after extra time – enough to keep Brazil top of the list.

That will be of no consolation for the history-making striker as Lionel Messi inspired Argentina’s final triumph in one of the greatest finals of all time, winning 4-2 on penalties.

And for the time being, it won’t mean much to Brazil either, still aching from the shock quarter-final penalty shoot-out loss to Croatia.

Meanwhile, England remain in fifth place after the French were eliminated from the bottom eight and Wales are eliminated from the top 20.

Qatari kings Argentina moved up to second in the rankings, while France moved up to third and Belgium’s aging golden generation fell two places to fourth after their surprise group stage exit.

Perhaps the biggest surprise – at least if you judge by tradition and not by performance – is that Germany has slipped to 14th place.

A 2-1 opening defeat by Japan proved costly as they left Qatar in the group stage on goal difference.

In contrast, Japan would have climbed even higher than 20th place in the Fifa rankings had it not lost to Croatia in the round of 16.

And Morocco shot up from 22nd to 12th after becoming the first Arab and African World Cup semi-finalists.

Sunday’s epic final coincided with the FA’s confirmation that Gareth Southgate will remain in charge of the Three Lions.

The 52-year-old reviewed his position following his recent near-miss at a major tournament.

But on Sunday, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said in one expression: “We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate will remain in charge of England and lead our EURO 2024 campaign.

“Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support and our planning for the European Championship begins now.”
