Anthony Joshua may become ‘one of the greatest heavyweights of all time’ if he wins Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch and defeats Tyson Fury

ANTHONY JOSHUA may become ‘one of the greatest heavyweights of all time’ if he beats Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.

AJ is set to take on Usyk in July after being masterfully beaten by the Ukrainian in September.

But Fury, 33, has claimed he won’t wait to fight the winner for all the belts after announcing his retirement.

The WBC will now be pushing for a definitive response from the undefeated heavyweight champion.

And promoter Eddie Hearn believes if Fury changes his mind and beats Joshua, 32, Usyk, 35, it can set AJ up for legacy-defining fights.

Hearn told iFL TV: “I think he [Fury] is asked, “Are you retiring, and if so, do we have to vacate the belt.

“But he’s not retiring and he’s not going to vacate the belt and I expect that. If he retires, good luck to him.

“But I don’t think he will, I think he will fight the winner of AJ and Usyk in December.

“It’s going to be for the undisputed championship, it’s going to be a huge battle financially and it’s going to be a legacy-defining battle and it’s going to mark the winner as what we call a generation great.

“If AJ beats Usyk and then beats Fury, he will go down as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

“And if Fury hits her, Fury goes down like that.”

Joshua was first beaten in June 2019 in a stunning upset against Andy Ruiz Jr., 32, in New York.

But the British superstar brought the rematch to Saudi Arabia six months later and took revenge.

With his career potentially on the line again, AJ returns to the desert in hopes of making the double in the Middle East.

Hearn said: “I think there’s a very good chance you’re going to see that fight on July 23 in the Middle East.

“We received a number of offers from all over the world. We’ve worked through these and are getting close to this option.

“Team Usyk has emphasized that they would prefer this option because obviously there is a lot of money at stake.

“Honestly, I think Team Usyk would rather have a neutral venue and I can’t blame them. So here we are.

“Are we announcing this week? Probably not. But will we announce next week? Pretty sure.

“You’re going to see that fight, you’re going to see that fight in July and you’re going to have an official announcement soon.”
