Another major national supermarket accepting SNAP benefits online

HOUSEHOLDS that rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can add another place to shop to their list.

Wegmans has been accepting SNAP benefits as payment for a while, but only for in-store purchases – until now.

The major retailer is now allowing its customers to pay online with their benefits.

SNAP is a federal program that provides benefits to eligible individuals and low-income families through a rechargeable EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card.

The program is state-regulated, so make sure you are contacting the correct agency to apply for and use your card.

You can use your benefits on most fresh foods like meat, poultry, fish, fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

Just note that you may not use your EBT cards for alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, vitamins, medicines, dietary supplements, pet food, cleaning supplies, paper products and cosmetics.

Wegmans has over 100 stores: 48 in New York, 18 in Pennsylvania, nine in New Jersey, 13 in Virginia, eight in Maryland, six in Massachusetts and four in North Carolina.

Acceptance of EBT as an online payment has grown exponentially since last year as more states join the USDA’s SNAP online purchase program.

Amazon and Walmart were among the first to start allowing online payments for SNAP recipients, but as the shopping landscape continues to shift online, other retailers have followed suit.

Farmers’ markets in some states have now begun to expand their programs by allowing SNAP recipients to participate in the purchase of their fresh fruit and vegetables.
